NORTH NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) — According to Chief of Police Jim Bethards, the North Newton City Council approved the ordinance as written for the first offense of marijuana possession on Monday.
The ordinance will now make the first offense of personal possession of 1.5 ounces or less of marijuana in a vehicle an infraction instead of a misdemeanor. It will come with a $150 fine.
According to a draft of the ordinance, it is, in part, “intended to prevent people from entering the criminal justice system.”
The ordinance will take effect and be enforced once it has been published in Harvey County Now, the official newspaper of North Newton.
