Saucelito School seventh graders placed first in the recently held annual Anti-Tobacco/Marijuana Challenge Bowl hosted by the CHOICES Prevention program.
Springville Schools’ sixth grade team finished second in the event.
Twenty-eight teams of sixth and seventh graders participated in the game show-style event, answering questions about the harmful effects of tobacco and marijuana use, and the industries that promote their use.
At lunch, students had the chance to pose for pictures with Star Wars characters from the Central California Garrison of the 501st Legion.
Teams also participated in the Soapbox component of the competition, sponsored by the state Tobacco Use Prevention Education program. Teams created public service announcement presentations, which will be judged later. Judges will select three teams to present their Soapbox PSAs live at the 2024 Lip Sync competition on April 12 at the Visalia Fox Theatre.
Winning first place in the sixth-grade category was Palo Verde Union School and Palo Verde’s seventh-grade team also finished second.
